This easy, modern DIY winter hoop wreath is a perfect addition to any farmhouse winter home decor! I love how simple and elegant it looks, and it was SUPPERRRR easy (and cheap!!!) to make.

DIY Winter Hoop Wreath

I’ve been very interested in making my own DIY hoop wreaths this year, so of course I had to try one for winter. I’m not much of a wreath maker (yet!) so I’ve never really tried to make a real wreath, but I feel like hoop wreaths are like a gateway wreath that will hopefully lead me up to making beautiful regular wreaths 😂!

This DIY winter hoop wreath was made with an embroidery hoop. I love the rustic farmhouse touch the stained embroidery hoop gives! I’m also crazy about embroidery hoop crafts (like my mini hoop Christmas ornaments) because they’re extremely inexpensive, but the finished crafts look like they’re from Pottery Barn or something!

For the greenery in my DIY winter hoop wreath I used some artificial pine I got on Amazon in a bundle of greenery I had purchased. It was super easy to work with and I think it looks perfect for what I was going for. I can’t find the exact one I used, but this one is very similar!

If you’re looking for an even cheaper option, check out the greenery available at Dollar Tree! Sometimes they have some good selections to choose from.

To add some more browns to my wreath instead of just having green, I used a flexible garland with mini acorns and pinecones on it. I already had the garland at home and I got it from Michael’s a few years ago (I’m a craft supply hoarder, obviously). Here’s a similar one at Michael’s and these mini pinecones on Amazon could be hot glued on your DIY winter hoop wreath to give the same effect.

Alright, let’s get down to business. Here’s how I made my DIY winter hoop wreath!

Supplies

To make your DIY winter hoop wreath, you’ll need:

  • Embroidery hoops
  • Wood stain (optional)
  • Artificial pine
  • Green floral wire
  • Acorn & pinecone garland OR mini acorns and pine cones
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue

How to Make a DIY Winter Hoop Wreath

Step 1: Separate the embroidery hoop

To make my winter hoop wreath, I decided to separate the embroidery hoops first. Technically you can make the hoop wreath without doing this, but I didn’t like the silver screw part of the embroidery hoop sticking out and weighing the hoop down.

Just unscrew the screw and pull the two hoops away from each other. I used just the inner hoop for this project.

I got my embroidery hoops in a variety pack, so I made several different sizes of the winter hoop wreaths. I think I ended up using a 6-inch hoop, an 8-inch hoop, and a 10-inch hoop.

Step 2: Stain the embroidery hoop (optional)

I say this step is optional because your wreath will look cute with or without staining! It all depends on your home decor style and the look you’re going for.

My house and my decor has a ton of warm wood tones, so the light embroidery hoop doesn’t mesh very well. This wood stain is one of my favorite colors. It comes out so warm and fits perfectly with my other decor!

Step 3: Add your greenery

After your hoop is dry from the staining, it’s time to start adding the pine to your DIY winter hoop wreath. I placed pieces of my pine on the hoop, then wrapped dark green floral wire around the pine and the hoop to keep it in place.

I put the greenery around about half of the embroidery hoop.

Step 4: Add your pinecones and acorns

Next, I wrapped my acorn and pinecone garland around my pine to add some browns and creams into the mix.

If you’re using mini pinecones and acorns, just hot glue them on in places where it looks like they’re needed.

Step 5: Hot glue some finishing touches

At this point, I felt like my DIY winter hoop wreath still wasn’t complete because there were still some empty looking spots and I could see some of the floral wire sticking out. Enter: My hot glue gun.

I pulled off pieces of my pine so I had smaller pieces to work with. Then I just hot glued them wherever it looked empty or wherever I needed to cover floral wire. Ta-da!
